Nambucca projects

The Nambucca River is both a vital natural and cultural asset for the region and a significant contributor to the Nambucca Shire’s economy. The Our Living Coast Nambucca River Restoration project will seek to enhance the health of the river and estuary.

The Wellington Rock area at Nambucca heads is a draw card for many people, with its stunning sweeping views of the Nambucca estuary, adjacent national parks and nearby mountains. It is also an area of cultural importance to both indigenous and non-indigenous people.

Our Living Coast works to be carried out include removal of inappropriate tracks across the dune system and track upgrades in more appropriate locations, weed removal, dune plantings, fencing, rubbish removal and a community education program for caravan park residents adjacent to the dunes.

The Nambucca River has a number of smaller creeks draining into the river. A number of these are highly modified, lack native vegetation cover and are heavily infested with weeds. The Our Living Coast Nambucca Urban Creeks project will seek to improve water quality in these creeks through weed removal, native streamside plantings and other in stream works.

A community education program will see activities such as stormwater drain stencilling, workshops and “ river days ” for the community together with interpretive signage which stresses the importance of our river.

Progress report

Stormwater turtle field day 26th November 2011

There was no shortage of stormwater on the day but the inclement weather seemed to deter the crowds and other stall holders. Approx 30 people came and saw the plans for the on-ground works proposed for Freshwater Creek at Bellwood Park and Beer Creek and Anzac Park, Nambucca Heads. Council had an interesting display of what happens to your rubbish including plastic bags ending up in turtles. Other displays showed the stormwater cycle and how people in urban areas can help to keep the environment clean. There were many give-a-ways on the day such as showbags containing sustainable water bottle (PBA free and made in Australia), biodegradable pen, magnet, information about the project and information about stormwater pollution, dog doo bags for responsible dog owners, pamphlets and lots of information about pollution, weeds, libraries and Our Living Coast.
The stormwater didn’t dampen our spirits at the fair day

Stormwater Turtle Stencilling Kits

Public schools in Nambucca Heads each received a stencilling kit for the students to stencil stormwater drains. The drain stencilling fits into the primary school curriculum in both environmental and social subjects. This is a great way for students to learn about catchments and what happens to the water in the catchment before it discharges to the Nambucca River.

There are two more kits for the community to use in each of the Beer Creek and Freshwater Creek catchments, contact Jacqui Ashby 6568 0240 for more information and signing up to help stencil stormwater drains in Nambucca Heads.
