Festival program

Awesome main stage vibes – all day long

From chilled out bliss to booty shaking groove, down face dog to on your feet dancing – enjoy the all day onstage entertainment in the tranquil leafy surrounds by the banks of Coffs Creek.

Embracing the future without losing sight of the past, OKA draws upon their indigenous connection to place and country to create their signature feel good Australian earth sound, an irresistible blend of influences spanning house, big beat, reggae-dub, Roots, Jazz and world music.
A mashup of dance and downtempo electro beats marinated in the mystical spirit of the Dreamtime.

“Try to imagine Bob Marley meets Stevie Wonder via the chemical brothers, on acid, playing in a steaming rainforest with a didgeridoo and you are getting close”.

After their involvement in the 2000 Sydney Olympics together, the OKA journey began the following year and they continue to bring the joy, fluidity and simplicity of their positive music to a much larger, growing audience on a global stage. Independently selling over 170,000 albums, they have shared the stage alongside inspirational acts Arrested Development, Finnley Quay, Xavier Rudd, Dehli to Dublin, Kinnie Starr, Digging Roots to name a few.

While sharing the bill with the likes of Kiss, Santana, Sting, Burning Spear, Yothu Yindi, Beats Antiques, Fat Freddys Drop, Damian Marley and The Wailers.
OKA have thrived at festivals throughout Australia, Asia and Nth America including Glastonbury (UK), Ozora (Hungry) and Boom Festival (Portugal), Montreal Jazz (CAN), Winnipeg Folk (CAN), Green Room Festival (JAP), Earthdance & Joshua Tree (CA), Kahala Aina (Hawaii), Fusion Festival (GERMANY) Bali Spirit (INDO) and Woodford Folk Festival, Rainbow Serpent, Splendour in the Grass (AUS) Sydney Opera House (AUS). In these arenas OKA has sent unsuspecting crowds into hypnotic frenzies, gaining them a strong reputation for their festival highlight standout performances.

At the creative heart of the music is Stu Boga Fergie (aka DidgeriSTU) who connects you to earth with the deep subsonic pulse and resonance of his Yidaki (didgeridoo). He is the big man behind the electronic beats, keys and vocals inspired by his aboriginal heritage.
The OKA Collective includes captivating melody on guitar, sax, flute and woodwinds woven through organic juju beats of deep tribal fire.
A sound and force that touches the heart and connects the soul.

60% Water

60% Water is a musical collaboration between Hamish Malcolm, Art Schultz and Uncle Mark Flanders, and has its roots in the oral histories of people’s connection to the ocean and coast in the Solitary Islands region.

They saw the potential to interpret stories using music from the many fascinating stories collected, and have crafted a wide range of acoustic blues, roots and folk songs, which evoke strong images of the sea and coastline, and people’s connection to it and its creatures.

60% Water draws on the skills of Hamish on the blues harp and guitar, Art on lead guitar and stompbox, and Uncle Mark on the didge, and presents an interesting blend of coastal connection, environmental awareness, threats to species and their recovery, indigenous culture, and conservation.

Delivered by three individuals who work in environmental research, education and management in the Coffs region, 60% Water has a unique and powerful message of the need for us all to conserve and protect our ocean and coastline.

DJ Joelism

Spanning everything from Breaks, Funk, Dub & HipHop to Reggae, Blues & Smooth Jazzy Grooves, every set is naturally aspirated with oodles of the funky stuff.

No heroes here, just a humble serving of the rarest & most gargantuan grooves that possess REAL soul, put together with old school skill, a cheeky smile and a tip of the hat to all the amazing music that’s come before us.

No time for grumpy. Lets get funky!

Joel will be keeping the good vibes pumping between acts with a couple of his own solid sets to turn that solar power into grooving people power!

WOW Fusion Dance

The Cultural Fusion Unity Dance Crew is a group of dynamic women who are all passionate about sharing culture in our community. They have come together specifically to showcase that we are all one – one world, one soul, one beat – when it comes to expressing ourselves. These women live out the WOW Women of the World values & philosophies in their everyday lives, celebrating their commonalities and embracing their diversity in race, culture, politics and religion.

Gloria Mercy & Tori Donnelly are local Gumbaynggirr women who have embraced their cultural heritage and proudly offer traditional and contemporary Aboriginal dance to open festivals & ceremonies on the Coffs Coast.

Christina Monneron is a core member of WOW who has been enticing people with the rhythms of Cuba since 1999 through creating Australia’s first Cuban Dance Academy, after having lived there and experiencing a cultural and spiritual connection to the country and its people.

They are joined by newcomer to the Coffs region Ayesha, Afghani dancer, culture & language holder, as well as the vibrant & inspiring African dancer Maitoumbi with her energetic Afro-Fusion elements and the gorgeous young Fijian & Islander dancer Christine Chand, with her hip-shaking & shimmying Pacific Island Fusion.

Together they have chosen the music Kingston by OKA as this piece of music is a complete cultural fusion which cultivates unity & oneness, and are so very excited to have this opportunity to perform to OKA live at the Coffs Sustainable Living Festival.

Join the Coffs Creek clean-up!

On November 18 from 9am – 1pm Coffs Creek will be transformed into a creek cleaning haven thanks to the trash trading action that will take place as part of the Sustainable Living Festival. The scavenge turns litter into currency that is used to purchase pre-loved clothes and goods that have been pre-donated by the wider Coffs community.

Participants will be rewarded for every 10 pieces they collect with a token used as the currency in the pop-up seaside market. Coffs Harbour City Council as well as many local businesses have donated prizes for participants that collect the most litter, most butts, weirdest items and whoever’ scavenge the furthest.

There are 8-13 million tonnes of rubbish dumped annually into the ocean. Seaside Scavenge is an innovative and creative way to draw an unconverted audience’s attention to litter.

For participants to earn their currency they must separate and sort the litter collected into recyclables and non-recyclables. Then it must be recorded so that the data can contribute to the Australian Marine Debris Database managed by Tangaroa Blue.

We are looking for quality goods, clothes, books, accessories, shoes etc. for our pop-up market. Locals wishing to support via donation of pre-loved goods or time can reach us through the Seaside Scavenge website or social media pages.

Drop off point: 22 Earl St – Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre
Opening hours: Mon – Fri 9am – 4pm

You’ll also be able to exchange 20 pieces of litter for a drinks token that you can take over to The Plantation Hotel… and grab yourself a thirst quenching beverage after a job well done!

Friends of Coffs Creek – a Landcare group, will be at the festival doing what they do every fortnight and cleaning up Coffs creek. This amazing group of people every second week get together and clean up Coffs Creek because they are passionate and dedicated and they will be with the Scavenge crew finding the ‘Hot Spots’ where the most rubbish is!
