Come and experience Urunga from a Gumbaynggirr cultural perspective with Matthew Flanders.

  • Discover ancestral stories and cultural knowledge related to traditional hunting practices and traditional ecological knowledge, including seasonal hunting patterns, species conservation and land management practices.
  • Learn about Gumbaynggirr principles of sustainability and stewardship, emphasising the importance of maintaining ecological balance and respecting and preserving the land.
  • Learn about the cultural significance of traditional foods hunted and gathered by the Gumbaynggirr people in ceremonies, rituals, and daily life, and how they contribute to the cultural identity and cohesion of the Gumbaynggirr community, fostering a sense of belonging and connection to the land.
  • Experience traditional hunting tools and techniques used by the Gumbaynggirr people, such as spears, boomerangs, and gathering baskets.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, practicing throwing spears or boomerangs under Matthew's guidance.

All this at the beautiful Yuruunga (Urunga) foreshore.
